くどいな…と思われている方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが(^^;

でも、例えば車を運転したことない人が、急にカーレースに出て優勝するなんてことは、あり得ないですよね(^^;

Points to save your family and yourself when your family member becomes depressed-How to take care of yourself

Hello.

My name is Hanako, I am the counselor for those whose family members are suffering from depression.

What I always say is that when a family member is depressed, it is important to “take care of yourself”.

That is really the most important thing a person can do for a family member who is depressed.

  • Both the depressed and the family “take care of oneself”

This is essential to get out of depression, and it is quite difficult. In Japan, many people have lived with the exact opposite sense of values. And there is an important point to “take care of yourself”. That is what Mrs. P said, “I am going at my own pace and my husband at his own pace, I don’t try to change it forcibly but go with the flow.”

Important Points to take care of yourself

“Take care of yourself” means to “take care of your mind and body.”

We have seen and heard many ways to take care of our “body”, but we haven’t been taught to take care of our “heart.” Therefore, even if you are told to take care of your “heart”, many people don’t know what to do. There are several points to take care of your “heart”. I have summarized the points!

1.Do what you can do now, at your own pace.

If you have a habit of trying everything very hard seriously, you might tend to set big goals. But for a person who has never driven a car can not suddenly enter a car race and win the championship, right?

It is obvious when a depressed person cannot work at the same pace with other people after a long break from work, it does no good to care what other people think or blame oneself for it. It is obvious you can’t do that, and it doesn’t have to be.

You are working hard, handling housework perfectly… You are trying to do the impossible, and blaming yourself for not being able to do it all, feeling sorry for yourself for trying the best today. Do what you can do at the moment. That is 100% if you can do just that. If you can do what you can do right now, that is the best for you. If the result is failure, it didn’t work out, that is ok.

Do the thing you can do now at your own pace, it doesn’t matter slow or fast. If you can do only what you can do at your own pace, you will not be irritated or frustrated by the depressed person.

2.First of all,  know yourself.

To value yourself is not to change yourself, but to know yourself first. We seem to know ourselves, but actually we know very little about ourselves. What you are comfortable with, what you like, and how you want to live. What makes you uncomfortable and what you dislike. To find out all that, observe yourself on a daily basis. Be aware of the changes in your mind and body sensitively.

Under what circumstance are you frustrated, happy, angry, sad, not feeling well? There are many hidden hints to know yourself. Actually that is what counseling does first. We can’t really see ourselves, when and how you feel, what comes to your mind… and how it can make you relaxed and happy. We need to know each of them first. To imagine you have another self, observe yourself in all aspects.

3.Forgive and accept yourself.

When a family member suffers from mental illness, we tend to blame ourselves not being able to support the depressed person, feeling guilty or bad. Even if the family is well, there are many people who have the habit of blaming themselves. I have always been like that. I notice myself blaming myself many times a day for the things not going the ideal way. I think there are many people who regret the past. When you blame yourself for the past, it means you blame a part of yourself now. At this moment the “past” does not exist. Your “past” is only a part of you now. If you don’t accept your past, it’s because you aren’t forgiving yourself then. Don’t blame yourself for saying mean things to your husband because you didn’t know about depression. At that time, you had your own circumstances that made you say terrible things. People who are frustrated by their husbands blame themselves for their frustration, but they don’t have to blame themselves.Stop blaming yourself and forgive yourself first. Recognize yourself for your hard work. When you stop blaming yourself, it leads to stopping the depressed person from blaming oneself.

4.Compliment yourself.

We have a habit of working hard. In addition to doing our best, we blame ourselves for what we are lacking and corner ourselves. And that leads to depression. You can’t follow the same path.

Please praise yourself for waking up in the morning, doing the housework, and  going to work.

“Wow, I am amazing! You did your best, you did it!”

Complimenting yourself is like watering the flowers of your heart. You must take care of your own flower not letting it dry up and die. Compliment yourself in your heart many times every day. Compliment yourself for the things you always do! If you do it, you’ll be happy and it becomes your habit (^^)

5.Thank yourself

People who blame themselves tend to think that they are living on their own. Of course, partially we are living based on our own will, but that’s not all, right? Starting from our hearts, our brains, our organs, they are all working miraculously for us without our consciousness. And this body is made to live on this earth, and this earth is made to make this body live. We are kept alive every moment by a great power that is beyond our knowledge. When we think this way, aren’t you really thankful for our life? Let’s be thankful for our body as if we are borrowing our body from God. Before going to bed every night, let’s say “Thank you” to our miraculously working body and mind,  and fall asleep. Words have vibrations. I’m sure that the positive vibration will please our body and soul very much (^^)

Take good care of yourself

We haven’t learned much about “cherishing ourselves” when we are growing up.But this world is a mirror of our hearts. If you cannot take good care of yourself, it is hard to really take good care of other people and the environment surrounding us.If you have a family member that is suffering from depression, are you a very hard worker and serious?I sacrificed myself and worked hard for someone. But isn’t it strange that it makes you feel painful? I’m doing my best, but it’s not working. Somehow it is a harsh reality. That means that for you, it is not the equation that “I worked hard = good”, “I worked hard = happy”.

You can work hard, but you can also choose not to work hard. You can choose either to work hard or not to work hard, either choice  is great, and it has the same value. So if you’ve been trying hard for your depressed partner, but your partner is still suffering from depression and you wonder why you are in this situation…you may little by little, stop working harder and try to do what you feel comfortable, what makes you happy, and make yourself peaceful.

What you really have to do now is to take care of yourself. Only you can truly value your mind and body.

Recently, from the bottom of my heart, I feel that all people are children of God.Everyone is a precious life, a precious existence.Shouldn’t we cherith ourselves who are children of God?

In order for the depressed person to take good care of himself, first of all, you need to take good care of yourself as a family (^^)
