What does a wife learn from having a depressed husband?

My husband was first diagnosed with depression in January 2012. Six years have passed since then. My life has changed greatly during these years. Through the ups and downs I have learned a lot from Mr. Depression (to objectively look at depression, my husband and I call the disease “Mr. Depression”).

Based on what I have learned from my experience, I will write down the important things a wife can learn from having a depressed husband.

  1. First, do not hold back, try to release what has been piling up inside you.

Yes, my husband is the one who is suffering from depression. Depression is the same as other diseases. Only the person who is suffering from the disease can feel the pain, the person who is sick is suffering the most.

An equally important fact is that, the family members that are supporting the sick person are really having a hard time too.

As I always write in my blog, for a husband to get better from depression, it is a crucial element for his wife to be healthy and happy.

The wife of a depressed husband thinks ‘I have to work harder, I have to endure’, ‘I have to work harder for my husband and children.’ The harder the wife tries and endures, the further she moves away from health and happiness.

The husband blames himself by looking at his suffering wife, which moves him further away from recovery.

I was exactly like that a couple of years ago.

In order to help my husband get better I was overdoing things and eventually prevented my husband from getting better.

When the depressed husband cannot go to work, financial difficulties increase. The wife has to work, do house chores, and take care of children. She cannot get her husband’s attention, she is exposed to the prejudice of others, and feels like she cannot consult with anybody. It’s really hard for a wife to support a depressed husband.

First, learn about how to express your feelings. Don’t say these things aloud to your depressed husband, write it out on a piece of paper (it’s good to tear the paper after writing!), and murmur in the shower 😀:

I am having a hard time!

I want to quit my job and be a housewife!

I want to buy a lot of clothes I like!

I want to take private lessons!

I want my husband to spoil me!

I want my husband to worry about me!

I want my husband to look at me!

Something like that. You can say whatever you want to say! Everything in your mind, everything you are feeling, everything that makes you mad or sad.

After you spit out everything, imagine the graceful face of the Holy Mother, or an ideal mother’s face. Imagine Mary or your mother, stroking your head and saying “You really tried hard. You really did your best. It must be very hard.”

You really did a great job! Praise and console yourself (😀).

  1. Talk to your husband.

Have you released all the feelings that you have been trying to hold back? After you spit out everything, the next step is to communicate with your husband.

Have you tried to ask how your husband feels everyday? How does it feel to suffer from depression?

When a person is depressed, he has no energy to engage with people, the depressed husband won’t say to his wife: “I am feeling this way.”

So I imagined how my husband felt on my own, I wasn’t sure what my husband was thinking, what has become the norm for him. But first, speak up and confirm with each other how you two feel, and what you two are thinking. This basic communication is very important.

Be calm, hold an interest in your husband, ask how your husband feels when he is depressed.

Most people are happy when other people want to know more about them.

After asking what your husband is really feeling and thinking about, then express your own feelings to your husband.

Explain what happened and how it caused you to feel, what made you feel a certain way and made you feel bad, etc. Honestly communicate to your husband about how you feel, without blaming him, this way your husband will understand how you feel and listen to what you have to say.

It is very basic, but because married couples live together everyday, we can neglect our communication with each other without realizing.

Communicate without assuming or making decisions for the other spouse. This is especially important for family members.

After I talked to my husband, I learned that my husband was upset about not being able to go to work, and I no longer had suspicions about him skipping work anymore.

People tend to think of the depressed lazy, or too easy on themselves. Even family members misunderstand the disease.

To understand how a depressed person feels you must ask them. After that, we can communicate our own feelings. In this way we deepen our understanding of each other, and we can avoid unnecessary fights and stress (😀).

  1. It’s not my husband’s depression, actually it’s all my problem.

Finally, one more important point. Now, your husband is suffering from depression, something which is difficult, tough, very hard. That is the reality they are facing. Actually it is not because of husband’s depression.

The world that is spreading right in front of us as we see it as reality, is created by us. We can only see the world we created. It is by no means your fault that your husband got depressed, but your thoughts and actions can affect his reality.

For example, in my case: When I was little, my parents taught me it is important to do my best, try hard and be patient. Don’t bother others. Don’t do bad things. Behave well. Study well. I was raised strictly, but gently at times. When I was in high school, I studied hard, planned my schedule, finished college, and got a job on my own. I patted myself on the shoulders. When I entered into society, the rules imprinted inside of me caused a lot of trouble for myself and others close to me.

I was always blaming myself, very nervous about people getting mad at me, worrying about my evaluation, I tried very hard to be a good girl, and the stress made me sick all the time. During that time, I met my current husband, and I unknowingly gave him a lot of my stress. At that point, it was impossible to continue how I was living, but I wasn’t aware of that yet.

I managed to keep going by relying on him, but after he was transferred to a more difficult job, he fell into depression. After he was depressed, I tried to support my husband excessively. I have continued to create the reality that my husband is a depressed person, someone that I have to support.

Thoughts such as “I have to do my best” and “I just have to put up with it”, create the reality that I have to work hard and endure. (Be careful falling into the habit of thinking “I” have to do everything)

Now I think about it, the reality of “depression” should have come for both my husband and myself. My husband is finally getting out of depression since I started to change. My harsh reality was not because of my husband’s depression, it was all created by me. I really feel that way now.

First, you must face yourself. Have the courage to live your own life. Try to have the perspective that the reality you are facing is what you subconsciously chose.

Only when I was able to change my point of view, I was finally standing at the entrance of the life I wanted to live. The husband’s depression is a chance for the wife to face herself. From there, create your own life together with your husband

Thank you for reading to the end.
